Is this your first time traveling with checked luggage and you’re unsure about packing rules and size limits? In your checked luggage, you can bring food, even alcohol, clothes, and electronics. However, there is a list of prohibited items.
We want to help, so we’ve prepared a list of items you cannot pack in checked luggage. Discover it below!
Checked luggage: dimensions and weight
The first thing you need to know is that each airline has its own rules regarding checked luggage dimensions and weight. Generally, the maximum dimensions allowed are 158 cm (length + width + height), and the weight ranges between 23 and 32 kg. Different travel classes may have different maximums, and exceeding them usually incurs extra fees.
So before you start packing, check the guidelines provided by your chosen airline.
What you can pack in checked luggage
- Clothes, shoes, and accessories: Any type of clothing, shoes, or jewelry.
- Cosmetics and personal care items: No quantity restrictions like carry-on luggage, but liquids should be securely sealed.
- Food: Non-perishable food is allowed, but check the regulations of your destination country.
- Electronic devices: Laptops, tablets, cameras, etc.
- Alcoholic beverages: Allowed in checked luggage, with limits depending on the destination country. Typically, up to 5 liters of alcohol with a concentration of up to 70% is permitted.
What you cannot pack in checked luggage
- Explosives and flammable materials: e.g., fireworks, flammable paints, and fuels.
- Chemicals and toxic substances: e.g., chlorine, self-defense sprays, or cleaning chemicals.
- Weapons and ammunition: Even toy guns or items resembling weapons are prohibited.
- Lithium batteries: These can cause fires and are only allowed in carry-on luggage, with certain restrictions.
- Sharp objects: Knives, scissors, and other items that could be used as weapons are strictly prohibited.
Unlike carry-on luggage, checked luggage rules are more permissive regarding what and how much you can pack. However, remember that each airline and country has its own restrictions, so make sure to follow them and avoid problems!
What you can pack in carry-on luggage
Carry-on luggage has different rules than checked luggage. You are allowed to bring:
- Personal documents: Passport, plane tickets, identification.
- Clothes, shoes, and accessories.
- Money and valuables: Jewelry, small electronic devices (phone, laptop).
- Medications: Bring medications needed during the flight in their original packaging and have your prescription with you.
- Liquids in small amounts: Each container must be a maximum of 100 ml, and all containers must fit in a transparent bag of up to 1 liter.
Your luggage shouldn’t be a problem when traveling—just follow your airline’s rules and those of your destination country, and everything will be fine.
Remember to watch the dimensions, avoid packing prohibited items in checked or carry-on luggage, and don’t exceed the allowed weight for your ticket to avoid extra fees.
Start every trip on the right foot and don’t let anything stand between you and the perfect vacation!
